OUR CHURCH
Mount Tabor Baptist Church began its journey in early 1959, during a time of big changes—Bishop College was preparing to move, and the New Highland Hills Community was starting to take shape. It was in the midst of this growth that Reverend Floyd D. Harris, led by the Holy Spirit, saw the need for a church in this young and developing neighborhood. With a heart full of purpose, he began going door to door, connecting with new residents, and sharing his vision of planting a church in the community. On May 3, 1959, that vision came to life with the founding of Mount Tabor Baptist Church.
For the next 28 years, Pastor Harris led the church with wisdom and dedication. Under his leadership, the church launched new ministries, opened a daycare center, grew its membership, and built the worship space we still use today. Pastor Harris remained faithful to his calling until his passing, leaving behind a strong foundation. After his homegoing, God brought us another gifted leader—Rev. Dr. Stephen C. Nash, Sr.—who would carry the vision even further.

From the moment he arrived, Pastor Nash focused on strengthening the church's structure to support our growth. He brought in new staff roles and helped the church acquire 26 acres of land in the community. Under his leadership, we expanded our ministry reach with a weekly radio program on KGGR/1040 AM and added nearly 30 new ministries.
In 2002, we celebrated the completion of our Family Life Center and administration wing. A year later, our original sanctuary was transformed into 18 classrooms and storage space. In 2004, we dedicated our education wing in honor of our founder and his wife, naming it the Reverend Floyd D. & C.M. Harris Education Center.
Pastor Nash’s impact was deep—spiritually, organizationally, and in the community. He served faithfully for 32 years before retiring, and he now rests in the presence of the Lord he so passionately preached about.
Even through the challenges of changing times and the uncertainty brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, God’s faithfulness never wavered. In March 2021, He brought us a new leader—Rev. Branden D. Walker—a young, energetic pastor with a heart for people and a passion for God’s Word. Since Pastor Walker stepped into leadership, we’ve experienced renewed energy and growth—spiritually, in our membership, and financially.
His preaching is both powerful and easy to understand, and his warm, witty personality has helped create a church atmosphere that connects with every generation. We’re excited about what God is doing and can’t wait to see what’s ahead as we continue following His vision and bringing glory to His name.
